The Benefits of Repentance

 1. David’s history (1 Samuel 16:1) “Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

A. A man after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14 & Acts 13:22)

B. A man who gave into temptation (1 Samuel 11)

2. David’s appeal (Verse 1) “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your       unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.”

A. David appeals to God’s unfailing love and great compassion

B. His focus is on God’s goodness not his own

3. David’s need (Verse 2) “Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”

A. He recognizes his greatest need is for his sin to be removed

4. David’s desire  (Verse 10) “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

A. David desires a new heart and God’s strengthening grace

B. He wants to enjoy the fellowship he had with God before he sinned
